TLA Gaybies Vs. GLAAD Media Awards

This year marks the 25th anniversary or the silver anniversary of the GLAAD Media Awards. GLAAD is a non-profit organization and advocacy group that according to its web site promotes understanding, acceptance and equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. The GLAAD Media Awards specifically recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the LGBT community and the issues that affect their lives. This includes four, movie categories. The nominees for each of those movie categories are as follows. I've highlighted in red my personal choices for who should win:

Outstanding Film - Wide Release: Blue is the Warmest Color, Dallas Buyers Club, Kill Your Darlings, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and Philomena.

Outstanding Film - Limited Release: Concussion, Geography Club, Out in the Dark, Reaching for the Moon and Yossi.

Outstanding TV Movie or Mini-Series: Behind the Candelabra (HBO) and In the Flesh (BBCA)

Outstanding Documentary: Bridegroom, Call Me Kuchu, God Loves Uganda, The New Black and Valentine Road.

This year also marks the 2nd annual TLA Gaybies. The editors of TLA Video's web site look at the films featuring or centering on gay male characters in a given year and nominate what they consider to be the best of six categories: Best Gay Drama, Best Gay Romance, Best Gay Comedy, Best Gay Documentary, Best Gay Thriller and Sexiest Gay Movie. The TLA Gaybies also has three other categories: Best Director, Best Supporting Actor and Best Lead Actor. Like with the GLAAD Media Awards, the TLA Gaybies did recognize works in the print media, but this year is more of a focus on movies. TLA Video posts the nominees on its site and asks readers to vote on the ones they like. The names that get the most votes by its deadline, which this year is April 15, Tax Day, are the winners. Here are the nominees. Again, I've highlighted in red my personal choices for winners:

Best Gay Drama: Animals, Behind the Candelabra, C.O.G., Dallas Buyers Club, In the Family and In the Name Of...

Best Gay Romance: The Falls: Testament of Love, Hawaii, Monster Pies, My Last Round, Out in the Dark and Yossi.

Best Gay Comedy: G.B.F., Geography Club, Scenes From a Marriage, Tell No One, Turtle Hill Brooklyn and West Hollywood Motel.

Best Gay Documentary: Bottom, Bridegroom, I'm a Stripper, Interior. Leather Bar, Undressing Israel and Valentine Road.

Best Gay Thriller: Aleksandr's Price, Cal, Solo, Stranger By the Lake, Truth and Tumbledown.

Sexiest Gay Movie: Hawaii, Interior. Leather Bar, Stranger By the Lake, Triple Crossed, Truth and The Visitor.

Best Director: Kyle Patrick Alvarez, Marco Berger, Marçal Forés, Eytan Fox, Lee Galea, Jon Garcia, Christian Martin, Michael Mayer, Rob Moretti, Steven Soderbergh, Jean-Marc Vallée and Patrick Wang.

Best Lead Actor: Tristan Barr, Michael Douglas, Nick Ferrucci, Sam Fordham, Jonathan Groff, Ohad Knoller, Sean Paul Lockhart, Matthew McConaughey, Daniel Radcliffe, Manuel Vignau, Wayne Virgo and Patrick Wang.

Best Supporting Actor: Mateo Chiarino, Matt Damon, Dane DeHaan, Benjamin Farmer, Jared Leto, Lucas Linehan, Rob Lowe, Rob Moretti, Denis O'Hare, Corey Stoll, Todd Verow and Oz Zehavi.

Yet, even with all these gay films from this past year recognized, over 30 between GLAAD and TLA, still there are some films that got overlooked. Two films come from Gary M. Kramer's article "Best Queer Films of 2013." They include My Brother the Devil and Four. Three come by way of Breaking Glass Pictures. They are Capital Games, Mr. Angel and Leather. Lastly, I would also mention Rodney Evans' The Happy Sad.
